Transport for NSW engaged Balarinji from the early stages of the project. Balarinji developed a detailed Designing with Country framework, curated and co-created public art and delivered interpretive content to embed local Aboriginal heritage and culture within the identity of the M12 Motorway.
Through ongoing co-design and deep collaboration with the local Western Sydney Aboriginal community and community-endorsed Aboriginal artists, Balarinji developed a distinctive Aboriginal narrative, design concepts and a public art strategy that informs the artworks throughout the corridor.
Balarinji’s Designing with Country methodology is a cultural design framework that guides our co-design practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge holders, storytellers and creative practitioners to translate Place-based knowledge, spirituality, protocols, history, culture and contemporary stories for design interpretation.
Through this authentic co-design process, the M12 artworks are deeply connected to Country and reflect the unique cultural landscape of Western Sydney. They speak to the cultural resilience of Dharug people and Country.
