The heartfelt evening brought together community, colleagues and long-time supporters to reflect on John’s life as a saltwater Yanyuwa man from Borroloola, his experience as a member of the Stolen Generations, and his lifelong advocacy for Aboriginal rights, equality and cultural engagement.
Speakers included Balarinji’s Rachel Taylor, Julia Moriarty and Ros Moriarty, who shared personal reflections and stories from John’s journey — from surviving assimilationist policies, to becoming the first Aboriginal man selected to play football for Australia, to co-founding Balarinji with Ros Moriarty in 1983.
The launch was made even more special by the presence of 23 John Moriarty Football Indigenous Community Coaches from the Northern Territory, far North Queensland and western New South Wales, along with JMF Inaugural Scholarship Holder, Shadeene Evans (Marra), who spoke about the impact of JMF programs in their communities.
We thank everyone who joined us to celebrate this important book and John’s enduring contribution to culture, community and Country.
