NAIDOC DISPLAY WALL
During July’s NAIDOC Week 2018, Balarinji collaborated with Sydney Metro, Kelleher Nightingale Consultants and Muru Mittigar to design a display of archaeological finds uncovered during the Sydney Metro Northwest Project.
During the early stages of Sydney Metro Northwest, a comprehensive Aboriginal Archaeological Salvage Program was undertaken. Archaeologists worked alongside registered Aboriginal parties, to excavate 1168 square-metres of land. More than 13,000 artefacts were recovered from 24 sites between Bella Vista Station and Tallawong Road.
The recovered artefacts reveal a rich 4000-year history of Aboriginal people living in the area. Their use of the current rail corridor as an historical transport route parallels the contemporary development of the Sydney Metro Northwest.
The display was an opportunity for Sydney Metro staff to learn about the finds and understand their importance to the Aboriginal community.
