Public art & curatorial

We curate, commission and co-create impactful, enduring works of public art. Our cultural authority is in our relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, communities, Traditional Custodians and knowledge holders.

With end-to-end capability, we span everything from cultural placemaking planning to art concepts, fabrication and installation. We have more than 30 years of experience in successfully sourcing and managing cultural relationships and Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property (ICIP).

Our public art and curatorial strategies draw from place-based and community-specific Connecting with Country and Designing with Country frameworks, methodologies that translate local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, culture, art, stories and identity.

Our work spans interior and exterior responses to large scale public art, interpretive precincts, international public art commissions, urban regeneration projects, transport infrastructure and more.
  • 40 years’ experience delivering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander public art since 1984.
  • 140+ major artwork installations
  • 200+ artist commissions
  • Wide network of Indigenous artists and creative practitioners across Australia, including from remote communities, many of whom exhibit nationally and internationally
  • Unique public art co-creation community engagement process
  • End-to-end delivery from narrative to conceptualisation through to fabrication and installation.

Deeply cultural and local to Place

We navigate cultural custodianship and elevate artistic practice by working with both artists local to place and nationally and internationally exhibiting artists from all over Australia.

To create a unique art outcome for each site and precinct, we engage the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities throughout the project in an integrated, culturally sound way. Our artistic vision comes from the narratives our engagement process draws from community.

Exceptional design-led curation

Our approach to public art is always focused on the design intent and storytelling objectives of the site or precinct. We curate and co-create visually resonant works that enrich cultural placemaking. They reflect the project’s Connecting with Country narrative and establish a cultural presence on Country.

We work closely with the interdisciplinary members of the project team to deliver well constructed, beautifully conceived art that aligns with the client’s aspirations and the project’s character.

"Balarinji listens in a way that everyone is heard, within a truly client-responsive process. Balarinji brought great ideas and a special energy to our project. Nothing prior measured up to the process Balarinji provided."

Cathryn Byrne, Board Member & Military Advisory Committee Member, former Jezzine Barracks Community Trust, Townsville, Queensland

“I like working with Balarinji because they come from a cultural perspective where their team has an understanding of how to work with Aboriginal people and the local community. They’re also very respectful of our intellectual property, our intellectual knowledge and our culture. Everything was done the right way and it was a terrific experience. I can’t wait to work with them again in the future.”
